A milestone for the post-mining era: RAG's new control centre
In March 2019, RAG’s new control centre opened at the “Pluto” site in Herne-Wanne. This is where the company safeguards its post-mining processes to protect people and the environment. One of its main tasks is to monitor the mine water. A large number of plants and their processes in the Ruhr, Saar and Ibbenbüren are now monitored around the clock from the control centre.
The opening was a step on the way to RAG’s so-called “perpetual obligations” after the end of the German coal mining industry. RAG has a responsibility to take care of all the consequences of mining, which is why the new control centre is deliberately designed for eternity. A total of 155 tonnes of reinforcing steel and 3,600 tonnes of concrete were used.
A real marathon could be accompanied by the installed data cables: 42 km of Leoni Pro 1300 were installed, which almost corresponds to the classic marathon distance of 42.195 km. As this was a new build, the scope of work also included the house entry from the public communications network (fibre optic cable) and the low-voltage cables from the transformer station to the low-voltage scaffolding.
