Data cable as long as a marathon: New building in Frankfurt/Main for the Automobile Club of Germany.
To ensure that the targeted 7 million people can travel safely, the electric trains need to be maintained and repaired if necessary. The new, 105 metre long hall serves this purpose. On top of this, the 21 FLIRT electric multiple units also need to look clean, which is why the hall has a washing track as a special feature.
Eiffage Heinrich Walter Bau was responsible for the turnkey construction of the new building, Neugebauer for the complete electrical engineering.
The specified construction time was ambitious. From April to December 2016, not only did the two-track, combined workshop, maintenance and washing hall have to be constructed, but also a three-storey building with ancillary workshops, administration and social rooms as well as a high-bay warehouse extension.
The project was technically and, above all, logistically challenging. It started with the access to the construction site. There was only one narrow driveway and if one lorry was already at the top, the second had to wait.
The track hall was also very narrow. You have to imagine it as a long tube with a gaping hole in the centre for the rails. In order to be able to work at all, the trench was bridged with special scaffolding that could be moved back and forth. But there was little room for the Neugebauer team and their materials. Everything had to be well planned so that the right materials were in the right place at the right time. There was no such thing as a “quick pick-up”. The new building was constructed in such a way that an extension is also possible on the 5,000 m² site. The current building has a floor area of 1,700 m².
